OPEN VAULT: RELICS OF AN IMAGINED FUTURE PRESENT 2017

A selection of software retail packages designed for cyber weapons developed by the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and made first made public by Wikileaks in their Vault 7 leaks on March 7th, 2017.

Cyber warfare involves the deployment of cyber weapons, or weaponized software also known as malware, against targets. This collection of software boxes imagines what these cyber weapons might look like if sold in a public commercial space using some of the visual language of cultural tropes referenced, hinted at, or suggested by their names. They are relics of an imagined future present.

Open Vault is the product of research by Phillip David Stearns (Brooklyn, NY/USA), artist-in-resident of IRAA and institut  bild.medien during spring/summer 2017 coupled with the concept of software retail packaging as a vehicle for presentation conceived by Jamie Allen and Mortiz Greiner-Petter in their WINDOWS project.
