AINU NENO AN AINU
Ainu Neno An Ainu is a long term documentary project, both a solo photo series and a documentary film, co-directed with filmmaker Neo Sora.
The film is an interwoven set of stories narrated mainly by Maya, a young Ainu activist who grew up in the Hokkaido village of Nibutani. Her voice guides the audience as other villagers tell their stories and portray the histories of their community, from their individual and collective journey of forced assimilation and discrimination to the revitalization of their own language and culture. The cast is comprised of the people who live in the village of Nibutani, which hosts a population that is over 80 percent of Ainu descent. The stories of Nibutani form an extended family album, revealing a tight-knit community deeply involved in both recovering and reinventing their indigenous heritage after a history of Japanese colonization.
Ainu Neno An Ainu, both as a photo series and as a film, was exhibited and screened internationally at museums and festivals, such as the Rautenstrauch-Jost Museum in Cologne, the Tokyo Photographic Arts Museum in Tokyo, and Nippon Connection festival, among others.
Laura Liverani will share her hands-on experience engaging with the Ainu community, and the choice of the collaborative portrait and the family album as a mode of representation to elicit personal and collective narratives. Following the screening, Liverani will conduct a one-day workshop focusing on the representation of others through photographic portraiture. For participation in the workshop, please register with mareike.foecking@hs-duesseldorf.de.
