Die PBSA der Hochschule Düsseldorf trauert um Ihren langjährigen Gastprofessor, Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Oliver Thill. Nach schwerer Krankheit ist Oliver Thill am 2. März 2026 im Alter von 55 Jahren verstorben. Mit ihm verlieren wir einen hochgeschätzten Kollegen und Lehrenden, dem wir als Fachbereich und insbesondere als Masterstudiengang Civic Design zu tiefem Dank verpflichtet sind.
Von 2015 bis 2020 lehrte Oliver Thill zusammen mit seinem Büropartner André Kempe als Gastprofessor an unserem Fachbereich. In diesem Zeitraum prägte Oliver Thill nicht nur nachhaltig die Lehre im Architektur- und Städtebauentwurf sowie der Stadtbautheorie, sondern beteiligte sich wirkungsvoll an der Entwicklung des neuen Studiengangs Civic Design. Die Struktur des programmatischen Studiengangs hat er entscheidend mitgestaltet.
Durch seine unnachahmliche Begeisterung für die Welt im Allgemeinen und die Architektur im Speziellen hat er Studierende und Kolleg:innen gleichermaßen an einem so lustvoll kontroversen Diskurs beteiligt, der allen nachdrücklich in Erinnerung bleiben wird.
Oliver Thill war ein Vollblutarchitekturfan, er brannte für die Disziplin und liebte es, sich mit anderen darüber auseinanderzusetzen. Mit großer Entschiedenheit vertrat er seine zum Teil unbequemen Thesen, die mit entwaffnendem Lächeln und Lachen vorgebracht sich tief im Bewusstsein aller verankerten und dort ihren Zauber entfalteten.
Er lebt weiter in dem bemerkenswerten architektonischen Werk des Studios Kempe Thill, in den vielen schönen Publikationen, aber vor allem in den Erinnerungen derer, die ihn persönlich als Studierende und Kolleg:innen erleben durften.
Unsere Gedanken sind bei seiner Familie, bei seinen Freunden, seinem Büropartner André Kempe, dem Büro Studio Kempe Thill, sowie der Abteilung „Entwerfen und Ressourcen“ des Instituts Gebäudelehre der Leipniz Universität Hannover.
Dort wird im Herbst ein Symposium zu seinen Ehren stattfinden (weitere Informationen finden Sie hier).

The PBSA at Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences mourns the loss of its long-standing visiting professor, Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Oliver Thill. Following a serious illness, Oliver Thill passed away on 2 March 2026 at the age of 55. With his passing, we lose a highly esteemed colleague and teacher to whom we, as a department and in particular as the Civic Design Master’s programme, owe a deep debt of gratitude.
From 2015 to 2020, Oliver Thill taught as a visiting professor in our department alongside his office partner André Kempe. During this period, Oliver Thill not only had a lasting impact on teaching in architectural and urban design as well as urban planning theory, but also played an effective role in the development of the new Civic Design programme. He contributed significantly in shaping the structure of the programme.
Through his inimitable enthusiasm for the world in general and architecture in particular, he engaged students and colleagues alike in such a delightfully controversial discourse that will remain firmly etched in everyone’s memory.
Oliver Thill was a thoroughbred architecture enthusiast; he was passionate about the discipline and loved engaging with others on the subject. With great conviction, he defended his sometimes uncomfortable theses, which, presented with a disarming smile and laughter, became deeply embedded in everyone’s consciousness and unfolded their magic there.
He lives on in the remarkable architectural work of Studio Kempe Thill, in the many beautiful publications, but above all in the memories of those who had the privilege of knowing him personally as students and colleagues.
Our thoughts are with his family, his friends, his office partner André Kempe, Studio Kempe Thill, and the ‘Entwurf und Ressourcen’ department of the Institute of Building Typologies at Leibniz University Hannover.
