The international conference »New Cybernetics« invites you to discuss new approaches to cybernetics with renowned researchers and theorists. The aim of the conference is to formulate a new theoretical approach that is capable of repositioning the current understanding of society, nature and technology, and to identify orientation possibilities for dealing with the complex challenges of the present.
Design has an important role to play in this context. The conference will therefore explore the question of how design thinking and action can be understood according to the New Cybernetics and what scope and options for action exist for designers.
Cybernetics was developed in 1947 by Norbert Wiener as a science of control and monitoring, and was later developed by second-order cybernetics (Heinz von Foerster), the theory of autopoiesis (Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela), and systems theory (Niklas Luhmann), among others.
New Cybernetics builds on the tradition of second-order cybernetics, but differs in that it no longer sees itself as a science of control, but as an art of navigation, and emphasizes the ecological aspect of cybernetics. The term »New Cybernetics« can therefore be defined as the art of navigation without domination. New Cybernetics thus represents an alternative concept that can replace the classical concept of control and allows an open and creative approach to technology and nature.
